How to Choose The Best Organic Foundation (That Your Face Will Love You For)

Have you ever thought about how your makeup affects your skin? Plenty of us have swapped to more organic skincare routines and organic shampoos in the quest for clean beauty, but be sure not to overlook other products that could be affecting your skin—namely, makeup. Swapping to organic makeup could make a huge difference in your skin.

It's our largest organ and works hard to protect our bodies from the environment and external nasties. Why not treat your skin as well as it treats you by choosing an organic foundation? There's literally one out there for all skin types, too—not all organic or natural makeup is powdered mineral foundation! There's just as good of a range in organic foundation when it comes to your favorite texture and coverage compared to the regular stuff, so you won't be disappointed!

Help! How Do I Choose a Perfect Organic Foundation?

When it comes to these foundations, I’m looking at three key things—texture, finish, and coverage. These three factors combine to create what’s going to be the perfect foundation for you. Texture refers to whether the foundation is liquid, cream, powder, or even stick—each texture is ideal for different skin types, so knowing which is which really helps narrow down the search!

The finish refers to how a foundation sets down after application. The best natural foundation for you is going to depend on this a little bit! Some foundation stays a little bit dewy and some stay matte. Preference for either also depends on skin type! There's also an in-between, usually called satin—it's not too dewy, but isn't fully shine-free matte either.

Next, probably the most crucial thing for most people is coverage. The thing is, a lot of people actually overestimate how much coverage they need (and absolutely go ham!). I'm suggesting foundations from sheer to full—usually, coverage doesn't depend on skin type. It's a completely personal preference, especially for people that have redness or acne.

There’s a bit of a cruel irony here, though—it’s tempting to completely cover up what’s perceived as any blemish with as much coverage as possible, but that usually creates a super-mask like effect—not exactly what we’re going for here...

So... Which skin type should choose which organic foundation?

Liquid Foundation: Liquid foundation is the most versatile and can be used by every skin type—what matters the most is the finish. Liquid foundation is about the middle of the road too, for application. It's easy to use, but also easy to go overboard with! Plus it can make a bit of a mess if spilled (and we ALL know how hard it is to get rid of makeup stains!)

Powder Foundation: Powder foundation is better for normal to oily skin. Any dry skin flakes are usually accentuated by powder—we want to make any imperfections look less obvious, remember? Powder foundation is also pretty fool-proof and easy to use—there’s no chance of any cakey foundation here! However, there’s no need to go this overboard…

Stick Foundation: Stick foundations are best for combination to oily skin types. They’re a little harder and waxier in texture and normally have a stronger pigment than other foundations. They can be more easily built up in coverage in specific spots, perfect for concealing blemishes.

What about tinted moisturizers and cc creams?

I’ve put a few on this list because they still have a really nice combination of coverage while lending natural benefits to your skin. Typically, they will have a lighter coverage and dewy finish—perfect for those with dry skin types.

Now, let’s take a look at the foundations!

What's the Best Organic Foundation Out There? My 8 Picks

This EVXO foundation is Certified Organic, Gluten-Free, Vegan and Cruelty-Free—if that’s not already a great start, then I don’t know what is! It also has a very natural, medium coverage that lets freckles peek through but conceals redness. I love that it has a wooden-handled bottle, too—this means that every time I finish a bottle, I’m not creating as much waste as with a regular foundation bottle.

The dropper bottle also makes it super easy to control exactly how much foundation to use, no wastage here!

It comes in a broad spectrum of 12 shades which is acceptable, but more could definitely be added. At least the range isn’t literally 10 light-medium shades with 2 ‘deep’ shades that are still only medium tan—the range goes to deeper shades. I guess you could buy two colors that you’re in between and mix them together, but it kind of makes an affordable foundation twice as expensive just to get your shade.

pacifica organic foundation

Okay, I admit the naming of this one is a little weird—is it a CC cream? Is it a foundation?

CC Cream technically stands for ‘color correcting’ cream, but most of the time it alludes to something with sheerer coverage than usual. Pacifica Beauty claims that this is a medium coverage tinted foundation suitable for all skin types. It also has SPF 17, but don’t be fooled into thinking this provides enough SPF protection—you still need a sunscreen product underneath for full protection.

However, the overall coverage is sheerer than what you'd expect from a medium, but not without covering mild blemishes. From my own experience, I'm going to rate this a light-medium coverage.

The only drawback that I see with this foundation is that there are literally only two shades. Warm/Light, and Natural/Medium. If you're anything darker than an NC25, you're out of luck with this one—sorry! While this super limited shade range obviously isn't ideal, it's par for the course when it comes to lighter coverage products.

Supposedly, it has color adapting pigments that adjust to your skin shade, but in reality, that's just marketing. The product blends into your skin because it's sheer, not because it's adapting to match your skin! When something is lighter in coverage, the color match doesn't have to be exact to look good, so you have a little bit of leeway there!

pur organic foundation

Powder foundation is almost always foolproof, and this organic foundation from Pur is no exception. For a powder, this provides some seriously impressive coverage—it’s easily buildable and doesn’t cake up, which is something that I always appreciate in a foundation.

It's super silky in texture and is marketed to take the place of concealer, foundation, setting powder, and SPF—hence the name, 4-in-1. I mean, I don’t dispute that it can replace the first three, but it only has SPF 15—even if you were applying enough powder to get SPF 15 coverage in the first place, SPF30 is my personal minimum.

So far, this has the widest range of shades—26 to be exact—that cater to a huge variety of depth and undertones. Now that’s what I'm talking about! The great thing about powder foundations is that you can use them to set any of these other natural foundations on the list so that you're ensuring that all of your makeup routine is totally natural and organic.

100% Pure has some of the best organic products out there, so it’s only natural that I would have at least one of their amazing products on my list!

What sets this apart from the rest is the use of natural fruit pigments for coverage—while most other natural makeup relies on naturally sourced minerals, I’m pretty sure this is the only one on this list to use fruit pigments.

It also uses rice bran for a flawlessly matte finish, controlling shine and making sure that skin isn’t left looking greasy or oily. Love that for me by the way—I need all the help I can get in the oil-control department! However, the shade range is a little lacking as well. There are only nine shades, with most of them quite similar to each other, then a big jump to the darkest shade.

Again, this is a tiny bit frustrating because everyone should be able to enjoy natural makeup—not just those of us with lighter skin tones.

mineral fusion organic foundation

So, for this all-natural foundation,  the team at Mineral Fusion has done some kind of sorcery and created a powder that's great for all skin types.

Normally I would recommend that dry skin types shy away from powders (it can settle in dry spots and fine lines, not very cute) but the fact that it's good for dry skin totally blew my mind.

It's enriched with Pomegranate, White Tea, Red Tea, and Sea Kelp Extracts to keep skin happy—and let's be real, this definitely does. It comes in 15 different shades (yay for shade inclusivity!) and has buildable coverage. So, you can take this foundation from just a little "oh, is she wearing makeup?" to a flawlessly done face. And even if you think you have no makeup skills, you can’t mess this one up—just apply and blend until you’re happy. Also, powder foundations are the best non toxic foundation for lazy girls because you can blend and go!

au naturale organic foundation

Foundation sticks are perfect for on the go and when you’re pressed for time, and this one from Au Naturale is no exception. Seriously, you can just swipe it where it’s needed and either blend out with a finger or go over with a brush for all the coverage that you need.

Like powder foundations, sticks are also incredibly user-friendly and honestly, they’re hard to make look bad!

What's awesome about the Au Naturale stick is that it goes from a creamy stick formula to powder on the skin, basically self-setting and eliminating the need for setting powder (if you use one). It comes in a very respectable 15 shades that accommodate for most skin tones. Foundation sticks are also amazing multipurpose products—depending on which shades you pick up, these sticks can double up as organic concealer and contour sticks. Not gonna lie, I'm a huge fan of multi-purposing products to get more out of them!

So, these are easy to use, totally natural, and you can get more bang for your buck—what’s not to love?

The best organic foundation recommendations wouldn’t be complete without a primer and concealer recommendation, right? So I’ve rounded up my top organic makeup primer and the best organic concealer to use with each and every one of these foundations!

Half of getting makeup to look good is a primer. This little guy is perfect for all skin types and can even double up as a moisturizer because the ingredients are that hydrating. But to be honest, you should still use a moisturizer underneath if you can—it’s good to have a distinct line between makeup and skincare, even if the makeup is natural and organic!

One of the best things about organic makeup is that you don't have to worry too much about primer/foundation incompatibility. Traditional makeup is usually either water or silicone-based and needs the right primer to match. If you're not using the right primers and foundations, anything that you put on your face is just going to break up and melt. If this sounds familiar, then you definitely have an incompatibility issue! This mineral primer is formulated with a blend of oils, minerals, and rice starch—making it perfect for every single foundation on this list.

BaeBlu organic primer

Any makeup routine isn't complete without concealer, either—this one from BaeBlu is made with organic and natural ingredients to perfectly complement any organic foundation that you choose. Unlike conventional concealers, it's a cream formula—perfect for dabbing on to imperfections and dark circles, no huge Instagram under-eye triangles here!

My tip for concealer is to use a finger tip and warm it up a little on the back of your hand before applying. This makes everything blend in seamlessly and stay put!

Which one is THE best all-natural foundation, though?

Well, it's hard to choose—I'm pretty sure I've found all the best, paraben-free foundation formulas, but if they were all on Survivor, who would come out on top? (For real though. There can only be one winner!)

*drumroll*

For me, the best non toxic foundation has to be the 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Healthy Foundation. It just has the whole package—natural ingredients but amazing performance. Plus, there’s a lot you can do to sheer it out (add moisturizer), make it dewy (add a few drops of oil). The matte finish isn’t too much of a problem for me, plus dewy foundations almost always pull greasy on me instead!
